SUMMARY: The Public Affairs Department has an opportunity for a Technical Writer/Editor reporting to the Creative Services Office (CSO) manager, under technical direction of the team lead editor. Working in a team environment, candidate will provide writing and editing support on a wide array of scientific, technical, administrative, and nontechnical manuscripts from draft to completion for publication in digital and hard-copy formats for a broad range of clients.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Analyze, edit, rewrite, cross-reference, and reorganize document text to achieve a consistent style, tone, and high level of quality. Activities will require the exercise of technical background and judgment, and involve interaction with scientists, engineers, administrators, managers, and production staff.
Communicate complex scientific or technical information to scientists, funding entities, and the public. Solicit information from multiple sources to write and edit high-profile documents. Interact with high-level internal and external contacts to establish working relationships needed to produce publications for release to important decision makers, funding entities, government legislators, conferences, and the general public.
Write and/or edit annual reports, newsletters, Web site content, instructional materials, administrative manuals, technical procedure documentation, proposals, abstracts, books, fact sheets, posters, white papers, software manuals, journal articles, presentations, and other materials. Promote CSO editorial and graphic production services to new and existing internal clients.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required - Excellent written and oral communication skills. Extensive experience in editing and writing scientific and technical material. Ability to work collaboratively in a production environment. Must be able to work under deadline pressure. Must be an expert user of Microsoft Word, preferably on the PC platform. Strong organizational skills. Flexibility.
May be a scientific or technical expert in one or more areas of specialization, but should also be comfortable learning enough about specific topics in other disciplines to assist clients with writing or editing as necessary. Broad knowledge of communication, information, and publication fields. A degree in science, engineering, English, Journalism, or a technical/communication field preferred (or equivalent experience in related areas). Typically, 8 or more years of experience in technical and nontechnical writing and/or editing.
Preferred - Some familiarity with HTML and Dreamweaver. Basic familiarity with EndNotes software, Captivate, Adobe Professional.
Notes
This is a limited (temporary) appointment not to exceed 900 hours in a rolling 12-month period. This position requires completion of a background check. There are multiple openings for this position.
